Why China

Two Health Systems, Running Side by Side

China does not offer international patients one thing. It offers a very large public teaching-hospital system built for volume and complexity, and a separate tier of private and international centres where scheduling is flexible and where most of the frontier cell and gene programmes are actually delivered. Which of the two suits you is a clinical question, and it is the first one we work out.

The Depth of the Public System

Grade-A tertiary hospitals in China carry enormous clinical volume and deep sub-specialist teams — Peking Union, the PLA General Hospital, Fuwai, Ruijin, Zhongshan, West China and others of that rank. That volume is what makes them worth travelling to for difficult, severe and complex cases.

A Frontier That Is Actually Filed

Alongside conventional care sits a large portfolio of domestically filed cell, gene and immunotherapy programmes, plus 187 categories of special-access imported medicine. Whether any of it applies to you is a question for a hospital, not a brochure — but the programmes exist and can be applied for.

Private and International Centres

Private and international hospitals generally offer more flexible scheduling and a more private inpatient experience, and most cell, gene and special-access-drug programmes are delivered inside these specialty centres — including the facilities at Boao Lecheng in Hainan.

One Coordinator, Whichever Route

Public hospital, private centre or a cross-hospital multidisciplinary review — the case is opened, managed and followed up by your MedVoyage Global coordinator. You are never left to negotiate a hospital in a language you do not read.

The File Travels First

Nothing useful happens until a hospital has read your imaging, your laboratory results and the record of what has already been tried. Getting that file complete, translated and in front of the right department is the work.

Where Care Is Delivered

Seven Cities Do Most of the Work

Coordination concentrates on the cities where the referral hospitals and the specialty centres actually sit. You are matched to the hospital that fits the condition — the city follows from that rather than the other way round.

Beijing

National referral centres and neurosurgery

Shanghai

Guangzhou

The Wider Trend

It Is Not Only Us Saying This

Two international reports in 2026 looked at why patients are travelling to China for treatment. They describe the direction the industry is moving in — read them as context, not as a recommendation for your case.

Coverage is not endorsement. These reports illustrate global industry trends. They are not an endorsement of the effectiveness of any therapy described on this page, and nothing here is medical advice or a substitute for a consultation with a physician.

What Is Treatable

Established Medicine First, Frontier Second

Most cases coordinated into China are ordinary hospital medicine done well — a diagnosis confirmed, an operation performed, a second opinion obtained. The frontier programmes below sit alongside that, are strictly screened, and are never a reason to stop or delay standard treatment.

Frontier Therapy Areas

Domestically filed cell, gene and immunotherapy programmes, grouped by the system they treat. Each one carries its own indications and its own exclusions, and none of them is priced here — cost follows the delivering hospital’s written quotation after it has reviewed your case.

Oncology & Immunotherapy

The largest group of programmes, spanning solid tumours and haematological malignancies — generally for disease that has already progressed through standard treatment, and always alongside it rather than instead of it.

  • Personalised DC tumour-vaccine therapy — adjuvant after solid-tumour resection, and for unresectable or incompletely resected tumours
  • Autologous NK-cell immunotherapy — lung, colorectal, breast, liver, gastric, ovarian, pancreatic and prostate cancer
  • TIL (tumour-infiltrating-lymphocyte) therapy — melanoma, lung cancer and various solid malignancies
  • CAR-T programmes — CD7-positive haematolymphoid malignancies, malignant mesothelioma, and recurrent CNS malignancies such as glioblastoma
  • Oncolytic-virus therapy (hVO1, M1) — advanced solid tumours after failure of standard therapy
  • Individualised tumour-neoantigen-peptide adjuvant therapy — after radical resection for pancreatic cancer
  • Anti-EBV dendritic-cell immunotherapy and EBV mRNA-vaccine gene therapy — EBV-associated disorders

Cardiovascular

Regenerative programmes for heart failure and limb ischaemia where medical therapy has been optimised and symptoms persist.

  • Human umbilical-cord mesenchymal-stem-cell regenerative therapy — heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (LVEF ≤ 40%, NYHA Class III–IV)
  • Allogeneic endothelial-progenitor-cell (EPC) therapy — severe lower-limb ischaemia

Respiratory

Cell-based programmes for chronic and fibrotic lung disease, where the aim is preservation of function rather than reversal.

  • Airway basal-stem-cell therapy — COPD, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease and pulmonary fibrosis
  • Menstrual-blood-derived mesenchymal-stem-cell therapy — pulmonary fibrosis and interstitial lung disease
  • Mesenchymal-stromal-stem-cell therapy — various forms of interstitial lung disease
  • CAStem-cell therapy — CT-confirmed pulmonary fibrosis or clinically diagnosed interstitial lung disease, ages 18–75

Hepatic

Programmes across cirrhosis, liver failure and recurrence prevention after liver-cancer surgery.

  • Umbilical-cord or menstrual-blood-derived mesenchymal-stem-cell therapy — liver cirrhosis and decompensated cirrhosis
  • Allogeneic hepatocyte therapy — compensated and decompensated cirrhosis
  • Allogeneic bone-marrow mesenchymal-stem-cell therapy — acute-on-chronic liver failure
  • Activated T-lymphocyte / RAK-cell and central-memory-lymphocyte therapy — recurrence prevention after hepatectomy for liver cancer

Orthopaedics & Sports Injury

Cartilage, meniscus and joint programmes with tightly drawn imaging and grading criteria — the defect has to fall inside a defined range.

  • Umbilical-cord mesenchymal-stem-cell injection — degenerative knee osteoarthritis
  • M-021001 cell therapy — knee meniscus injury, ICRS Grade I–III, 18 and over
  • Scaffold-free spheroid cartilage-particle autologous-chondrocyte therapy — knee cartilage injury, ICRS Grade III–IV, defect area 2–10 cm²
  • Umbilical-cord mesenchymal-stem-cell therapy — ankylosing spondylitis

Neurodegenerative Disease

Some of the most closely screened programmes in the network, and the ones where expectations most need managing honestly.

  • iPSC motor-neuron-progenitor-cell therapy — amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
  • Gene-modified-cell therapy — ALS patients carrying the SOD1 mutation
  • Human umbilical-cord mesenchymal-stem-cell therapy — Alzheimer’s disease, including mild cognitive impairment
  • Human amniotic-epithelial-stem-cell targeted-delivery therapy — primary Parkinson’s disease

Neurological Injury Repair

Post-stroke repair programmes, opened only once the acute phase is well behind the patient.

  • Allogeneic bone-marrow mesenchymal-stem-cell therapy — ischaemic stroke, onset one month or more ago

Metabolic — Type 2 Diabetes

For diabetes that has not come under control on conventional treatment, including insulin.

  • Human umbilical-cord mesenchymal-stem-cell therapy — poor glycaemic control despite three or more hypoglycaemic agents including insulin
  • GLP-1 and FGF21 dual-factor-overexpressing adipose-stem-cell injection — moderate-to-severe type 2 diabetes, ages 18–70, refractory to conventional treatment
  • Genetically modified adipose-derived-cell injection — type 2 diabetes inadequately controlled by multiple medications

Autoimmune & Post-Transplant

Mesenchymal-stem-cell programmes in rheumatology, and for complications after bone-marrow transplant.

  • Umbilical-cord mesenchymal-stem-cell therapy — rheumatoid arthritis
  • Umbilical-cord mesenchymal-stem-cell therapy — systemic lupus erythematosus
  • Mesenchymal-stem-cell intervention therapy — complications after bone-marrow transplant, including graft-versus-host disease

Rare Ophthalmic & Genetic Disease

Gene-therapy programmes that begin with genetic testing, not with travel. Confirmed pathogenic variants are a precondition, not a formality.

  • AAV gene therapy (ZVS101e, EXG102-031, FT-003) — hereditary retinopathy caused by mutations such as RPE65 and RDH12
  • Gene-edited autologous haematopoietic-stem-cell therapy — transfusion-dependent β-thalassaemia, eligible ages 7–55
  • AAV gene therapy — haemophilia A (congenital coagulation-factor deficiency)

Gynaecology & Reproductive Health

Ovarian and endometrial programmes, plus therapeutic vaccination after HPV infection.

  • Umbilical-cord or amnion-derived stem-cell therapy — premature ovarian insufficiency, diminished ovarian reserve and intrauterine adhesions
  • HPV therapeutic-vaccine therapy — post-HPV-infection status

Regenerative & Age-Related

Smaller programmes in oral medicine, colorectal surgery and age-related muscle loss.

  • Pulp or dental-follicle-derived mesenchymal-stem-cell therapy — chronic periodontitis and periodontal bone defects
  • Adipose-derived mesenchymal-stem-cell therapy with minimally invasive surgery — complex anal fistula
  • Allogeneic bone-marrow mesenchymal-stem-cell therapy — age-related sarcopenia
Before Any Programme Opens

How Cases Are Screened

These rules come from the hospitals, not from us, and they are the reason a good number of enquiries end before anyone books a flight. That is the correct outcome when it happens.

Oncology Immunotherapy

Complete pathology, tumour staging, molecular testing and the full record of prior treatment are required, and multidisciplinary tumour-team evaluation is mandatory. These therapies must not replace standard anti-tumour treatment and must not delay necessary conventional care.

Gene Therapy & Rare Disease

Full genetic-testing reports are required. Pathogenic variants, along with organ or visual function, must be confirmed by specialists in the corresponding field before a programme is considered.

Stem-Cell & Immune-Cell Therapy

Hospitals screen for active infection, severe organ-function impairment, coagulation risk, immune status and other contraindications before any therapeutic evaluation is made.

Throughout

Strict indications and contraindications apply, and no therapeutic-effect guarantees are given. The final regimen, the number of sessions and the cost follow the delivering hospital’s latest written quotation and its own clinical evaluation.

187 Special-Access Medicines

Overseas innovative medicines that can be applied for through the network, spanning oncology, general surgery, ophthalmology, neurology, dermatology, internal medicine, paediatrics, respiratory medicine, haematology and other departments.

Your medical information is collected for preliminary matching only. No prescription medicine is recommended to you and no stock availability is guaranteed. Whether a medicine can be applied for at all, and its indications and contraindications, is assessed independently by physicians at the receiving hospital. This is not a prescription, a drug advertisement, an efficacy promise or a stock guarantee.

Three Routes In

Public, Private or Several Hospitals at Once

Every route has a genuine advantage and a genuine condition attached. Both columns matter, and the second one is the column people skip.

Public hospital
Advantage

Large clinical volume and deep expert teams. This is the route suited to difficult, severe and complex cases.

Condition

Admission, specialists, beds, scheduling and international-service policies are set by the hospital and are not guaranteed.

Private or international hospital
Advantage

Flexible scheduling, mature international services, and a better inpatient experience and level of privacy.

Condition

Specialty capability varies from hospital to hospital, and the cost is usually higher. The hospital’s official quotation prevails.

Cross-hospital MDT
Advantage

Expert opinions, examinations and treatment from several hospitals integrated into a single pathway.

Condition

Requires the patient’s consent, and additional coordination and third-party costs may arise.

Clinical independence. All diagnoses, treatment plans, operations, prescriptions and clinical decisions are made independently by legally qualified hospitals and doctors in China. MedVoyage Global and its coordination partners do not provide medical diagnosis, and do not guarantee hospital admission, a specific doctor, a treatment effect, a recovery time or a cure.

The Network

Who Delivers Care in China

Hospitals, cell-therapy specialists and coordination teams, each doing a different job. Your case is matched to whichever of them fits the condition — and it stays a MedVoyage Global case throughout, whoever ends up treating you.

Access, not ownership. Listing a hospital or a partner reflects coordination access only. It does not imply ownership, exclusive rights or a formal legal association, and it does not mean a bed is waiting. Bed availability, specialist schedules, clinical acceptance, international-patient policies and charges are re-verified case by case, and admission cannot be guaranteed. All enquiries are handled by MedVoyage Global.

How a Case Works

Eight Steps, in This Order

Nothing is booked before step four, and nothing is promised at any step. You speak to your coordinator; we speak to the partners and the hospitals. No decision about your treatment happens in a conversation you are not part of.

01

Case Registration

You open the case with MedVoyage Global and send the diagnosis, imaging, laboratory reports, prior treatment history and your budget and location preferences, together with signed consent for your information to be shared with reviewing hospitals.

02

Document Review

The file is pre-assessed and you are given a list of what is missing — the examination reports and imaging that a hospital will ask for and that are quicker to obtain at home than abroad.

03

Assessment by Chinese Hospitals

The completed file goes to the hospitals capable of the case. Only a formal written confirmation from a hospital constitutes an admission intention — nothing said in a phone call does.

04

Written Case Proposal

You receive the hospital options, the projected treatment duration, a cost estimate and the payment stages in writing, before you are asked to commit to anything.

05

Your Confirmation

You accept a proposal, apply for the visa with the invitation documentation compiled for you, and travel is finalised — including for whoever comes with you.

06

Arrival and Treatment

Airport transfer, accommodation, registration, interpretation and in-hospital escort are arranged around the treatment schedule. Clinical care itself is delivered by the hospital.

07

Payment & Administration

Payment processing, invoice collection and the remaining non-clinical administration are completed after treatment, against the hospital’s own billing.

08

Follow-Up

Discharge records are organised and remote follow-up with the attending physicians is arranged after you return home, so your own doctors know exactly what was given.

A complimentary online consultation, where a case qualifies. For complete, well-documented applications judged clinically relevant, one online assessment by specialists from Chinese hospitals can be arranged at no charge, producing reference-level suggestions on treatment pathways and suitable hospitals. It is not an official hospital diagnostic report and not a diagnosis, it depends on the hospital confirming the physician and the appointment, not every case qualifies, and it cannot be exchanged for cash.

An aerial view of the Shanghai skyline at dusk
Plan the Stay, Not the Flight

The trip is built around the hospital’s schedule. Where the treatment runs over weeks, so does the accommodation, the interpretation and the arrangement for whoever travels with you.

Getting There

Travel, Visa & the Practical Side

The medical part of a case abroad tends to be the part that goes right. What derails trips is documentation, timing and language — so those are handled first and handled properly.

Main Arrival Airports

Beijing Capital (PEK), Shanghai Pudong (PVG), Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN) and Shenzhen Bao’an (SZX) cover the great majority of cases. Chengdu, Chongqing and Hainan are reached onward from these, and transfers are arranged to match the treating hospital rather than the cheapest flight.

Medical Visa Documentation

China issues a medical treatment visa. The invitation documentation from the receiving hospital is compiled as part of the pre-arrival work and you are guided through the application, but the visa itself is granted by the Chinese authorities and cannot be promised by anyone else.

Accommodation & Companions

Accommodation is coordinated near the treating hospital for the whole treatment window, not just the admission — including for family or a companion travelling with you. Cell and gene therapy courses in particular run over weeks rather than days.

Interpretation & Medical Escort

Professional medical interpretation for consultations, consent discussions and ward rounds, with a full-time escort for registration, examinations and in-hospital coordination. Consent to serious treatment is not something to sign through a translation app.

Plainly Stated

What This Is, and What It Is Not

Cross-border treatment attracts overselling, and the frontier end of it attracts more than most. Here is where the boundaries sit, before you spend any time on this.

We Do Not Practise Medicine

MedVoyage Global and its coordination partners in China are travel and case-coordination services, not medical institutions. We do not diagnose, prescribe or treat. Every diagnosis, treatment plan, operation, prescription and clinical decision is made independently by legally qualified hospitals and physicians in China, who also issue all legally significant medical documentation.

Admission Is Never Guaranteed

Hospital listings reflect coordination access, not ownership, exclusive rights or formal legal association. Bed availability, specialist schedules, clinical acceptance and international-patient policies have to be re-verified case by case, and a hospital can decline a case at any point.

Cost Is Quoted Per Case

No treatment on this page carries a price, because a real figure needs your records first. A preliminary written estimate is provided once the file is substantially complete; it is not a fixed medical price and it is not the final hospital bill, which follows the hospital’s own latest written quotation.

No Outcome Is Promised

Cell therapy, immune-cell therapy and gene therapy are cutting-edge technologies with strict indications, strict contraindications and real risks. No guarantee of cure, therapeutic effect, recovery time, a specific doctor or a specific timeline is offered — by us or by anyone acting for us.

Media Coverage Is Not an Endorsement

The reports referenced on this page illustrate global industry trends. They are not an endorsement of the effectiveness of any therapy, and nothing here constitutes medical advice or replaces an in-hospital consultation with a physician.

Every Enquiry Comes Through Us

Your case is opened, managed and followed up by your MedVoyage Global coordinator — one point of contact from the first message to the last follow-up, whichever hospital in the network ends up treating you.

Questions

Before You Send Anything

The questions patients and families ask most often about treatment in China. If yours is not here, ask it directly — most of the useful answers depend on the individual case anyway.

There is no price on this page, and that is deliberate. Cost depends on the hospital, the regimen, the number of sessions, the length of stay and the complications that do or do not arise — none of which can be known before a hospital has read your records. Once your file is substantially complete you are given a free preliminary estimate and a written quotation. Treat that as an estimate: the figure that governs is the delivering hospital’s own latest written quotation.

Send the records. Imaging, laboratory reports, pathology where it exists, and the full history of what has already been tried. The file is pre-assessed, you are told what is missing, and the completed file goes to hospitals capable of the case. Where the application is complete and clinically relevant, one complimentary online consultation with a specialist from a Chinese hospital can be arranged. If the answer is no, you are told that rather than invited to travel and find out.

For complete, well-documented applications judged clinically relevant, a preliminary online assessment by specialists from Chinese hospitals can be arranged at no charge. It produces reference-level suggestions on possible treatment pathways in China and on suitable hospitals. It is explicitly not an official hospital diagnostic report and not a diagnosis. It is subject to the hospital confirming the attending physician, the duration and the appointment slot; not every case qualifies; in principle it is offered once per approved patient; and it cannot be exchanged for cash.

The programmes coordinated here are domestically filed in China and delivered by licensed hospitals, but filing status, delivering hospitals and charges are all subject to change, and the hospitals’ latest written quotations and official filing information govern. These are cutting-edge technologies with strict indications, strict contraindications and genuine risks. No guarantee of cure or therapeutic effect is given, and you should be clear about which programme you are being offered before you commit to anything.

No. Oncology immunotherapy programmes must not replace standard anti-tumour treatment and must not delay necessary conventional care — that is a screening rule, not a caveat. Multidisciplinary tumour-team evaluation is mandatory, and complete pathology, staging, molecular testing and the full record of prior treatment are required before any programme is considered.

It can be applied for. The network covers 187 categories of overseas special-access medicine across oncology, ophthalmology, neurology, dermatology, internal medicine, paediatrics, respiratory medicine, haematology and other departments. What we do is collect your medical information for preliminary matching — no prescription drug is recommended to you and no stock availability is guaranteed. Whether a medicine can be applied for at all, and its indications and contraindications, is assessed independently by physicians at the receiving hospital.

Neither, in the abstract. Public Grade-A tertiary hospitals bring very large clinical volume and deep expert teams, which is what a difficult or severe case needs; but admission, specialists, beds and scheduling are entirely at the hospital’s discretion. Private and international hospitals schedule more flexibly, run more mature international services and offer more privacy, but specialty capability varies and the cost is usually higher. Most cell, gene and special-access-drug programmes are delivered in specialty private centres. The right answer follows your condition.

It depends entirely on the treatment. A second opinion or a diagnostic work-up is short. Surgery means the admission plus a recovery window before flying. Cell and gene therapy courses run over weeks, because collection, manufacturing and monitoring are separate stages that cannot be compressed. The hospital sets the schedule once you are assessed, and accommodation and companion arrangements are planned around it.

China issues a medical treatment visa. The invitation documentation from the receiving hospital is compiled for you as part of the pre-arrival work and you are guided through the application. The decision is the Chinese authorities’ alone — nobody coordinating your case can guarantee a visa, and you should be wary of anyone who says otherwise.

A licensed Chinese hospital and its physicians. They make every diagnosis, treatment plan, surgical and prescribing decision, and they issue all medical documentation. MedVoyage Global and its coordination partners handle the non-clinical work — records, matching, documentation, travel, interpretation, administration and follow-up — and do not practise medicine at any point.

Yes, and it is better when they do. Their notes inform the pre-assessment, and the discharge records and follow-up schedule come back to them. Remote follow-up with the attending physicians in China is arranged after you return home, so both sides know what was given and what to watch for.

Send the Records. Find Out What Is Real.

Open a case with your imaging, laboratory reports and the history of what has already been tried. The file is pre-assessed, you are told what is missing, and it goes to the hospitals capable of the case. You get the options, the projected duration and a written estimate before you commit to anything — including when the answer is that China is not the right place for your condition.

All enquiries about treatment in China and about the partners listed on this page are handled by MedVoyage Global. MedVoyage Global and its coordination partners are not medical institutions and do not perform diagnosis, prescribing or clinical treatment — all diagnoses, therapies and legally significant medical documentation are issued by licensed hospitals and practising physicians in China. Nothing on this page is medical advice or a promise of admission, eligibility, cost, timing or outcome. Programme filing status, delivering hospitals and charges are subject to change, and the hospitals’ latest written quotations and official filing information govern.
